WELCOME TO JESENICE!

With 21,000 inhabitants and a surface area of 76 km2, Jesenice is the third largest town in the Gorenjska region. It is an important administrative, social, cultural, sports and educational centre of the western Gorenjska region with a great network of kindergartens, primary schools and high schools, as well as a faculty for health sciences. The town also boasts the Jesenice General Hospital, which is considered one of the best hospitals in the country. The town and its surroundings offer numerous possibilities for recreation and sports. The locals are especially proud of the Podmežakla sports hall, which in 2013 hosted the European Basketball Championship for men – Eurobasket 2013, and the Ukova swimming pool complex with an Olympic-size pool and the only 10-meter diving platform in Slovenia.

Jesenice, an industrial town, marked for centuries by its iron industry, is today also home to sports, rich cultural heritage and diverse cultural events. Throughout the year, the town hosts several events, attracting visitors from near and far. One of the town’s most important attractions is the Stara Sava museum area, the oldest surviving foundry settlement in Central Europe with the preserved Ruard manor from the 16th century, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the beginning of the 17th century, Kasarna with workers’ flats from the end of the 18th century, the puddling blast furnace, Kolpern charcoal storage and a mill from the 19th century.

All those who prefer nature will also get to enjoy this place. Pristine natural beauties can be found just a stone's throw from the town’s centre. Jesenice is a good starting point for those who wish to visit the Vintgar Gorge and enjoy the majestic view of the 16-meter Šum waterfall. In addition, Javorniški Rovt near Jesenice is home to Zois Park, a botanical garden with three small lakes, known for changing their appearance throughout the year. Let us not forget Golica, the peak in the Karawanks which gave the name to the Slavko Avsenik’s composition “Na Golici”, which is considered as the world’s most played instrumental composition. In May, the sunny slopes of the Karawanks, on the Jesenice meadows spreading between the villages Plavški Rovt, Prihodi, Planina pod Golico and Javorniški Rovt come alive in the white colour of daffodils or – as the locals would call them – ključavnice (keyholes). Every year, the vast plateaus of these pleasant smelling white petals with a red‑lined sun in the middle attract numerous visitors to the villages over Jesenice and the view of these flowers never leaves them feeling disappointed.

The town’s variety of restaurants and tourist farms ensures a pleasant culinary experience for everyone, while several providers of private accommodation see to the comfort of each and every guest, making sure that they leave with a wish to come back.

Welcome to Jesenice – the town of steel, flowers, sports and kind people!
